Keratin Treatments
A keratin smoothing treatment relaxes the curl pattern and seals the cuticle so hair dries smoother and faster. It is a smoothing service, not a straightening one, and it does not permanently change your hair. The effect wears off gradually over a few months rather than growing out in a line.
What it actually does to hair
Frizz is largely a cuticle problem. When the outer layer of the hair lifts, moisture moves in and out freely and the strand swells and roughens. A smoothing treatment coats and seals that layer, then heat sets it. The curl loosens, the surface reflects more light, and humidity stops having the same effect.
The appointment runs roughly like this:
- A clarifying wash to strip product and mineral buildup so the treatment can bond.
- Section by section application, kept off the scalp.
- Processing, then a full blow dry.
- Flat ironing in small sections, which is the step that sets the result.
Most of the appointment is the finishing work. Rushing the ironing is the single biggest reason a smoothing treatment underperforms.
Who it suits
Smoothing suits anyone who spends real time fighting frizz, anyone whose blow dry never survives a humid Georgia afternoon, and anyone who wants their natural texture softened rather than removed. Curly hair keeps a looser version of its pattern. Wavy hair often goes nearly straight on its own.
It is not the right service if you want to keep your curl definition, or if your hair is already fragile from repeated lightening. We will tell you at the consultation if we think your hair should have a treatment plan first.
How long to plan for
This is one of the longer appointments on the menu because the ironing cannot be hurried. Plan for a substantial block of time and confirm the exact number when you book. Longer and denser hair takes proportionally longer.
Aftercare, which decides how long it lasts
- Use a sulfate free shampoo. Sulfates strip the treatment faster than anything else.
- Avoid heavy salt and chlorine exposure where you can.
- Expect results to last a few months, fading gradually rather than stopping suddenly.
- Your stylist will give you specific first-days instructions at your appointment. Follow them exactly; that window is when the result sets.
Booking it with color
Order matters. If you are coloring and smoothing, your stylist will tell you which comes first and whether they belong in the same visit at all. Smoothing can shift tone slightly, so color is often better placed before, or at a separate appointment. Ask at consultation rather than booking both blind.

Common questions
Will this make my hair completely straight?
No, and that is the point. Smoothing loosens your curl pattern and removes frizz. Wavy hair often ends up close to straight on its own; curly hair keeps a softer version of its curl and becomes far easier to blow dry.
How long does it last?
Typically a few months, fading gradually. How long depends mostly on your aftercare. Sulfate free shampoo is the single biggest factor, followed by how often you swim in chlorinated or salt water.
Can I do this if my hair is colored or lightened?
Often yes, but condition decides it. Hair that has been lightened repeatedly may need a strengthening plan first. Your stylist assesses this at consultation and will tell you honestly if waiting is the better call.
Is it safe for my hair?
Applied correctly to hair that can take it, yes. The risks come from applying it to hair that is already compromised, or from over ironing. That is why the consultation looks at condition before we book the service.
What is the difference between this and a relaxer?
A relaxer permanently breaks the bonds that create curl and grows out with a visible line. Smoothing is temporary, coats and seals rather than restructures, and fades gradually. They are different services with different chemistry and very different upkeep.
How soon can I wash my hair afterwards?
Your stylist gives you a specific window at your appointment, and it varies by the product used on your hair. Follow their instructions rather than general advice you find online, because that first period is when the result sets.
