Childrens Haircuts
Children's haircuts at Hanna Madison Salon are done at the child's pace, in the main salon, with a stylist who is not in a hurry. The goal of a first haircut is a child who will come back willingly, which matters more than a perfect result on day one. We cut children's hair in Columbus, GA for every age from first trim upward.
How we handle it
Children are not small adults, and a chair that spins and buzzes is a lot to take in. We work around it rather than through it:
- We let them look around first. Rushing a nervous child into the chair is how you lose the next five years of haircuts.
- They can sit on a parent's lap if that helps. Plenty do.
- We explain what each tool does before it comes near them, including the sound.
- Scissors instead of clippers when the noise is the problem.
- We stop if we need to. A slightly uneven fringe is a better outcome than a child who dreads the salon.
Timing the appointment
Book around the nap, not against it. A mid morning appointment with a rested child goes better than a convenient late afternoon slot with a tired one. Tell the front desk your child's age when you call and they will suggest a time that tends to work.
If your child has had a difficult haircut before, say so when you book. It changes how we start, and we would rather know.
First haircuts
For a first haircut, bring a familiar toy or something to watch. Expect it to be short and a little imperfect. We are happy to take a photo for you at the end, and most parents want one.
Sensory sensitivity
If your child is sensitive to noise, touch, or being covered by a cape, tell us in advance. We can skip the clippers, work without a cape, keep the water off their face, and book a quieter time of day. None of that is a special request here.
Who to book with
Any of our stylists cut children's hair. Hanna and Madison, our owners, are both parents themselves. Reagan is a mom of two. If you would like a specific person, the team page has everyone, or call 706-604-1862.
Pricing
Children's pricing is on the Service Menu, where all our numbers live. Booking a parent and child together? Mention it and we will schedule the time properly.
Common questions
What age can my child have their first haircut?
There is no set age. Some children need a trim before their first birthday, others have barely any hair at three. When it is in their eyes or the back is getting tangled, it is time. Bring them in and we will work at their pace.
What if my child will not sit still?
That is normal and we plan for it. They can sit on your lap, we can work in short bursts, and we can stop and finish another day if it comes to that. Nobody here is surprised by a wriggling toddler.
Can I book my child at the same time as my own appointment?
Yes, and it is often easier for everyone. Tell the front desk when you book so both appointments get the right amount of time rather than being squeezed together.
Do you use clippers?
Only if the child is comfortable with them. The noise is the usual problem, not the clippers themselves. We can do the whole cut with scissors if that is what it takes.
My child had a bad experience elsewhere. What now?
Tell us when you book, and tell us what specifically went wrong. We will start slower, let them watch someone else first if that helps, and treat the first visit as getting comfortable rather than getting a perfect cut.
