Highlights and balayage at Hanna Madison Salon are hand placed to your head shape and how you wear your hair, not applied to a formula. Balayage is painted freehand for a soft grow out; foils give you brighter, more uniform lift. Most guests end up with some combination of the two, decided at your consultation in Columbus, GA.
Balayage or foils, and why it matters
They are different tools for different results, and the wrong one is the reason a lot of people think they do not suit blonde.
- Balayage is painted on by hand, heavier toward the ends and softer at the root. It grows out without a visible line, so you can stretch longer between appointments.
- Foils trap heat and lift more evenly from closer to the root. That gets you brighter and more uniform, with a more defined regrowth line.
- Lowlights add depth back. Hair that has been lightened for years often needs depth more than it needs more blonde.
- Face framing is where most of the visible payoff sits. A little brightness around the face reads as a bigger change than the same work through the back.
A gloss or toner at the end sets the shade. That step is what separates expensive looking blonde from brassy, and it is never optional here.
Who it suits
Lightening suits anyone who wants dimension rather than a single flat shade. It is the right choice if you want to grow the look out gracefully, if you want less frequent salon visits, or if your hair has gone flat from one solid color. It is also how we soften a harsh line left by a previous set of foils.
If your hair is already lightened and feels dry or stretchy when wet, tell your stylist. We will assess condition first, and sometimes the right call is a gloss and a treatment now, with lift at your next visit.
How long to plan for
A partial is usually shorter than a full, and a first time balayage on dark hair is the longest appointment of the group. Plan on a half day for a significant lightening session. Your stylist gives you a real number at the consultation so you can plan the rest of your day around it.
Keeping blonde looking expensive
- Purple shampoo once or twice a week, not daily. Overuse turns blonde dull and gray.
- Book a gloss between lightening appointments. It is the cheapest way to keep tone honest.
- Heat protectant every time. Lightened hair scorches faster than virgin hair.
- Watch your water. Well water and chlorine both pull blonde toward brass quickly.

Common questions
What is the actual difference between balayage and highlights?
Balayage is a painting technique, applied freehand for a soft, diffused grow out. Highlights are usually done in foils, which lift more evenly and closer to the root. Balayage means fewer appointments; foils mean brighter and more uniform. Many guests get both in one visit.
How often do I need to come back?
Balayage often stretches to three or four months because there is no hard regrowth line. Foils usually want refreshing sooner. A gloss in between keeps the tone from going brassy and extends either one.
Can I go blonde if my hair is dark?
Usually yes, but often not in one appointment. Lifting dark hair to a clean blonde safely is a staged process. We will tell you honestly at the consultation how many sessions it takes and what your hair can handle in each one.
Why does my blonde turn brassy?
Warmth underneath gets exposed as hair lightens, and toner fades faster than the lift does. Water quality, sun, and heat styling all speed it up. A gloss appointment resets it, and purple shampoo used in moderation slows it down.
Will lightening damage my hair?
Lightener changes the hair structure, so condition matters. Applied correctly, to hair that can take it, with bond support and proper aftercare, it stays healthy. Damage comes from overlapping lightener onto already lightened hair and from pushing too far in one sitting.
Can you fix highlights I do not like?
Often yes. Bring photos of the result you wanted and tell us what was done. Depending on the issue we may add depth, re-tone, or place new lightener only where it is needed rather than lifting everything again.
