What Is a Blowout Haircut, and Does It Include a Cut?
Share
A blowout haircut sounds like it should involve scissors. It doesn't. At Hanna Madison Salon in Columbus, GA, a blowout haircut and a blowout are the same appointment. Nothing gets cut in either one.
The name trips people up at booking more than the service does. For how long the style holds and what changes it, read our main guide on blowouts in Columbus: how long they last and what helps.
What is a blowout haircut?
A blowout haircut is a blowout: a wash, a styling product, and a blow-dry finished with a round brush. No cutting happens at any point. The word "haircut" got attached because that's how people search for it, not because anything gets trimmed. If you want your ends cut or your shape changed, that's a separate haircut appointment.
On our menu you'll find it as Shampoo & Blow Dry. Same service, plainer name. Whichever one you book, your length and shape leave exactly how they came in.
Why do people call it a blowout haircut?
People call it a blowout haircut because "haircut" is the first word most of them type for anything done in a salon chair. That's how it looks from our side of the desk, anyway. We did not invent a service called a blowout haircut. We have a blowout, and people find it under a slightly different name.
The mix-up rarely causes trouble. Almost nobody walks in expecting a trim and leaves upset that we reached for a round brush instead of shears. It does raise one fair question: does booking a blowout also get you a trim?
Not automatically. If you want both in one visit, say so when you book. We'll schedule your haircut first, so the blowout is the last thing that happens before you leave. Our post on what makes a haircut work for you explains how we plan the cut itself.
What happens during a blowout appointment?
A blowout here usually runs close to an hour, wash included. Long or thick hair tends to run longer, since there's more of it to section and dry. You come in however your hair looks that day. Second-day, product-heavy, freshly washed, it doesn't matter.
We start with a wash and a heat protectant. Then comes the styling product. We're an ORIBE exclusive salon, so it usually comes from that line, picked for what your hair needs that day. You pay for what you get, and the product under the brush is one place we won't trade down to save time. From there we section your hair and dry it piece by piece with a round brush and heat. There's no processing time. No waiting on color.
The heat protectant step matters more than it looks. Hot air pulls moisture out of each strand as it dries. A protectant coats the outside of the hair, so the dryer and brush can shape it with less of that moisture loss. That's why it goes on before any hot tool touches your hair.
The brush and heat change the result more than the product does. A tight round brush with higher heat gives the smooth, flat iron straight finish clients bring in on a saved photo. A looser brush with lower heat gives movement and body instead. Those two techniques don't produce the same hair. So we ask what you want before we start. If you're not sure, bring a photo, or browse our Instagram for a finished style to point at.
In our experience, the finish holds for a day or two before it needs a rewash. Your hair type decides where you land. Finer hair tends to pick up oil sooner. Thicker or more textured hair usually stretches longer.
The pace matches every other appointment here. That means a head massage during the wash, a drink if you want one, and no rush to finish. If you arrive early, our small boutique of clothing and jewelry gives you something to browse. You leave with fresh hair, styled the way you asked. Nothing else about it changes.
When do you need a haircut instead of a blowout?
You need a haircut when the problem is the shape, not the style. Split ends, grown-out layers, and a length that feels wrong all call for scissors. A blowout styles what's already there. A haircut changes the shape. The blowout only changes how that shape sits until your next wash.
Some clients book blowouts because they want smoother hair day to day. A blowout handles that for one wash. We're certified in Keratin treatments, which are built for smoothing and manageability that carries past a single wash. Let's start with a consultation. We'll ask what your routine at home looks like, and how we can give you a style that fits it.
A blowout is also a low-risk way to try a new salon. Nothing about it can get messed up for good. One client put that worry plainly in a Google review: "Iām always scared with my hair that it is gong to get messed up but this salon always does such a great job!" A cut or a color change stays until it grows out. A blowout washes out with your next shower. If the finish isn't quite what you pictured, we adjust it the next time you're in the chair.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a blowout include a haircut? No. A blowout is a wash, a styling product, and a blow-dry set with a round brush. If you want a trim or a shape change, ask us to add a haircut when you book, and we'll cut first.
Can I book a blowout without getting a haircut at all? Yes. A blowout stands on its own, and clients book it ahead of an event or to reset their hair for the week. For a bigger occasion, our menu also lists Special Occasion Style.
What does a blowout cost? The price depends mostly on your hair's length and density, since more hair takes more time under the dryer. Adding a haircut changes the total, because it's a separate service. Our service menu has current pricing.
Will a blowout damage my hair the way daily heat styling sometimes does? No. One blowout done with a heat protectant is not where heat damage tends to come from. What we see in the chair comes from daily high heat with no protection.
