How Long Do Hair Highlights Last? What to Expect Between Visits
Share
Most clients notice their highlights looking dull weeks before they notice a single root. That gap surprises people. It also shapes how you plan your visits.
At Hanna Madison Salon in Columbus, GA, we walk every highlight client through that timeline before they leave the chair. Still deciding between traditional highlights and balayage? Our guide to balayage vs highlights vs ombre breaks down the technique differences in full. This piece picks up after the foils come out.
How Long Do Hair Highlights Last?
Based on what we see in our chair, hair highlights usually last eight to twelve weeks before regrowth starts to show. The toner fades sooner, often within four to six weeks. So color tends to look duller in the middle stretch before any root line appears. Where the foils sit and how porous your hair is shape that timeline more than any brand of lightener does.
Most clients land somewhere in that stretch, and placement and porosity move it either way. Placement is the biggest factor. Foils placed close to the root grow out faster, because your natural color pushes up right behind them. Face-framing pieces and babylights woven through the mid-lengths blend longer. That is why a softer, lived-in placement stretches the time between visits. The softer the placement, the softer the grow-out tends to look.
If you are choosing between our Full Highlight, Partial Highlight and Balayage services, placement is the decision that sets your refresh window. Here is how the two main approaches compare once you are home.
| What to compare | Foil highlights | Balayage |
|---|---|---|
| Technique | Lightener sits in foils, placed close to the root | Painted by hand with a softer gradient |
| How the grow-out reads | A harder line at the root shows sooner | Blends longer as it grows |
| Typical refresh window | The window above, earlier when foils sit close to the root | Tends to stretch past foils, in our experience |
The toner fades on a similar schedule for both. So your gloss timing stays about the same whichever you pick. You can see our lived-in and dimensional work on our Instagram.
Toner fades on its own schedule, and it usually moves faster than the placement grows out. If dulling bothers you more than roots do, that is the part of the cycle to plan around.
Your color history plays a part too. Virgin hair (hair that has never been colored) tends to hold a lighter result longer. Box dye and color you had before leave fewer clean spots for new color to grab. That is why we ask about every color your hair has seen, box dye included, before we ever open a lightener. We would rather ask one question too many than guess about what is already on your strands.
What Else Decides How Long Highlights Last?
Porosity decides most of what placement does not. Hair with a more open cuticle pulls in toner fast and lets it go just as fast. Hair with a tighter cuticle holds on longer. Two clients can leave with the identical formula and see different results eight weeks later. Porosity is usually why.
We check for it the moment we section you. We pull a small strand between two fingers along the shaft. If it catches or feels rough, the cuticle is more open and color will move faster. If it slides smooth, it usually holds longer. That quick check tells us whether to plan your next gloss closer to week four or let it ride toward week eight.
We also compare your natural root color with the shade you want. When that gap is more than two shades, regrowth shows sooner. In that case we often lean toward softer placement, so the line blends as it grows.
You pay for what you get. That holds for what we lift and tone with, not just what we send you home with. Goldwell does the lightening inside the foils. Once we rinse, Redken or Loreal Majirel handles the color step that sets your final tone. Quality over quantity applies to both. Then we choose placement in your consultation, based on how your hair behaves, not just what looks good in the chair that day.
What Are the Stages of Highlight Fading?
Highlights fade in three stages: the tone holds, the toner fades, then the regrowth shows. For the first three to four weeks, your highlights sit close to the tone we sent you home with. From about week four, the color reads a little warmer or duller as the toner fades.
Past week eight, regrowth becomes the visible issue. It shows fastest if your natural color is more than two shades darker than your lightened pieces.
That middle stage is when many clients come in for a gloss instead of a full re-highlight. A gloss refreshes the tone without adding new lightener. It is a shorter appointment, too. It keeps the middle stretch looking polished while the roots take their time.
What Do People Get Wrong About Highlight Maintenance?
The biggest mistake is treating highlights like a one-time purchase instead of an ongoing routine. A few habits shorten the life of your color faster than anything we do in the chair.
- Washing daily with a drugstore shampoo strips toner faster, no matter how well the color was applied.
- Skipping the gloss and waiting for a full re-highlight means spending most of the cycle looking duller than you want.
- Reaching for a box dye touch-up between visits often shifts the tone. That shift is hard to correct evenly later.
- Heat styling without a protectant speeds up fading around the face. That is where you notice it first.
Plenty of clients feel nervous before any color service, not just highlights. One client put it plainly in a Google review: "I'm always scared with my hair that it is gong to get messed up but this salon always does such a great job!" That worry is fair. Color is a commitment, and nobody wants to guess what week six looks like. It is part of why we walk through the maintenance plan before you leave the chair. That way the middle weeks never catch you off guard.
How Do We Help Highlights Hold Longer?
We help highlights hold with home care that protects tone and a plan built around your real routine. We are an ORIBE exclusive salon. We send most color clients home with a sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner built to hold tone rather than strip it. It sounds like a small swap. It matters more than most clients expect.
Let's start with a consultation. We ask a simple question first: what is your routine at home, and how can we build a style around it? From there we cover how often you wash, whether you use hot tools daily, and what your color history looks like. All of that changes how we place the lightener. It is how we build a dimensional, low-maintenance result that still looks blended as it grows.
Every refresh is priced to what your hair needs that visit. That depends on how much new growth needs lightening and how much toner your hair takes. Our service menu lists each highlight and gloss service and breaks down how that pricing works.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do highlights grow out faster than balayage? Yes. In our experience, the grow-out shows sooner with traditional foil highlights than with balayage. That means foil clients tend to plan their refresh a little earlier. The toner fades on a similar schedule for both, so gloss timing stays about the same.
Can I stretch my highlights past twelve weeks? Yes. Some clients prefer to. Expect more visible regrowth and a duller overall tone by then, and plan for the refresh to take a little longer, since there is more new hair to blend.
Does a gloss extend my highlights? Yes. It brings the tone back in a shorter, gentler appointment than a full re-highlight. Many clients book one between full color appointments to keep the color from looking dull.
Will highlights last longer if I wash my hair less? Yes. Fewer washes means the toner stays put longer. Stretching washes with dry shampoo in between keeps the color looking fresh longer than washing daily.
