Hair Extensions in Columbus, GA: Hand-Tied vs Tape-In vs Wefts
Share
Extensions are the service people research longest before booking, and the one where the wrong choice is most expensive. This is the honest version: what each method is, who it suits, what it really costs to keep, and the questions worth asking before anyone touches your hair.
What is the difference between hand-tied, tape-in and weft extensions?
Hand-tied wefts are sewn onto beaded rows and lie flattest, which suits fine hair. Tape-ins sandwich your hair between adhesive wefts and install fastest. Machine wefts carry the most hair per row and suit denser hair. The right one depends on your hair density, your budget, and how often you can return.
That is the short answer. The rest of this explains how to tell which one is actually yours, because the method matters far less than whether it matches your hair.
Why the method matters less than the match
Most extension regret does not come from picking the wrong method. It comes from one of three things: too much weight for the hair carrying it, a color match that reads as a wig in daylight, or a maintenance cycle nobody explained before the deposit was taken.
A skilled stylist can make three different methods look excellent on the right head of hair. No method survives being installed on hair that cannot support it. So the useful question is not "which method is best" but "which method does my hair support, and can I keep up with it".
How much hair do I actually need?
More than most people expect, and the amount is driven by the gap between where your hair ends now and where you want it to end. Adding six inches to fine, shoulder length hair takes more hair than adding thickness at the length you already have, because the extension has to fill the taper your own hair no longer provides.
This is why extensions are quoted rather than listed. Two guests can ask for identical photos and need very different amounts of hair, and the hair itself is the largest single line in the cost. Any salon quoting a firm number before seeing your hair is guessing, and the correction usually arrives after you have committed.
The rows question
Wefted methods are installed in rows. More rows means more hair and more length coverage, and it also means a longer install and a longer move up appointment. Ask how many rows your goal needs at the consultation, because that number drives both the install cost and every maintenance visit afterward.
What do extensions cost to maintain, not just install?
This is the number that surprises people. Every method needs moving up as your own hair grows away from the attachment point. That is a salon appointment on a cycle measured in weeks, not months, and it repeats for as long as you wear extensions.
Budget for the year, not the install:
- The install, which includes the hair.
- Move up appointments on a repeating cycle.
- Replacement hair, because extension hair does not last forever even when it is cared for well.
- The right products at home, which are not optional with extensions.
A useful test before you book: take the move up interval your stylist quotes, work out how many of those fall in a year, and decide whether you will genuinely attend all of them. If the honest answer is no, tape-ins or clip-ins are a better fit than a method that punishes a missed cycle.

Which method suits fine hair?
Hand-tied wefts usually, because the attachment sits flat against the head and there is no bulky bead or bond to show through. Fine hair also carries less weight safely, so the total amount installed matters more than the method name.
The failure mode with fine hair is not the extension showing. It is traction: too much weight pulling on hair that cannot support it, over months. A stylist who reduces the amount of hair rather than the price is doing the right thing, and it is worth listening to.
Which method suits thick or dense hair?
Machine or beaded wefts, generally, because they carry more hair per row and dense hair can support it. The goal with thick hair is usually length rather than volume, and the risk is the opposite of fine hair: not enough extension hair to blend, so the extension ends in a visible shelf against your own taper.
Will extensions damage my hair?
Not inherently. Damage comes from three avoidable causes, and it is worth knowing them so you can spot the warning signs early.
- Weight. Too much hair for the density supporting it, which shows up as tenderness at the attachment points and, over time, thinning at the hairline.
- Time. Attachments left well past their move up, so the beads or tape sit inches from the scalp and pull on hair that has grown away from them.
- Removal. Rushed or improper removal, which takes your own hair with it.
All three are salon-side problems, which is why who installs them matters more than which brand of hair is used. If your extensions hurt, that is information, not something to tolerate.
How do I know if the color match is right?
Look at it in daylight, not salon light, and look at the mid lengths rather than the ends. A single flat shade of extension hair against dimensional natural hair is the most common giveaway. Blended color usually needs more than one shade of extension hair to read as real.
If you are colored, plan the color first. Matching extensions to hair you are about to change is backwards, and lightening extension hair after the fact rarely goes well because it cannot repair itself the way growing hair does. Our custom color and highlights and balayage pages cover that work.
What should I ask at a consultation?
A good consultation is mostly the stylist asking you questions. These are the ones worth asking back:
- How many rows or pieces does my goal need, and why that number?
- What is the move up interval, and what happens if I am late?
- How long does the hair last before it needs replacing?
- What does removal involve, and what is the cost?
- What does my hair look like underneath after a year of this?
- Which products do I need, and which ones will strip the attachment?
The last question separates salons. Conditioner at the attachment point loosens most methods, and a stylist who has not mentioned that has not finished the consultation.
How long does an install take?
Longer than most people plan for, and it varies enormously by method and by how many rows you need. Individual methods take the longest, tape-ins the least. Ask for a real number when you book so you are not squeezing a half day appointment into a lunch break.
Can I still exercise, swim and sleep normally?
Yes, with adjustments that become automatic within a fortnight. Tie hair up for workouts and braid it loosely for sleep, because overnight friction is what causes matting at the attachment points. Rinse after chlorine or salt water, and dry the attachment area rather than leaving it damp against the scalp.
Tell your stylist how often you swim before you choose a method. It genuinely changes the recommendation.
Method comparison at a glance
No single row of this table decides it for you. Read down the maintenance column first, because that is the one people underestimate and the one that ends most extension journeys early.
| Method | Best for | Install time | Maintenance | Main trade off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hand-tied wefts | Fine to medium hair | Longer | Regular move ups | Highest skill dependency, so the stylist matters most |
| Machine or beaded wefts | Medium to dense hair | Moderate | Regular move ups | Bulkier attachment, needs density to hide it |
| Tape-ins | Fine hair, first timers, tighter budgets | Shortest | Shorter cycle | Adhesive is sensitive to conditioner and oil |
| Individual bonds | Maximum movement and placement flexibility | Longest | Individual removal | Time and cost of both install and removal |
| Clip-ins | Events, no commitment | Minutes, at home | None | Not for daily wear, and they do not blend as invisibly |
What are the warning signs of a bad extension job?
Some of these show up on install day and some take months, which is why it helps to know them in advance.
- It hurts. Tension you notice while sitting still is too much tension. Say so immediately rather than hoping it settles.
- You can see the attachment when your hair is down and unstyled, in daylight.
- No consultation happened. A price quoted over text, before anyone saw your hair, is a warning about everything that follows.
- The aftercare conversation never happened. If nobody told you which products loosen your attachment method, that is a gap.
- No plan for removal. Ask what removal costs and involves before you install. A salon that has not thought about the end has not thought it through.
- Your own hair is not assessed. Condition and density decide what is safe. A stylist who skips that is selling hair, not doing hair.
How do I look after them between appointments?
Extensions ask for about five extra minutes a day, and skipping them is what produces matting at the attachment points.
- Brush twice daily with a loop brush, starting at the ends and working upward while holding the root to take the tension off.
- Shampoo at the scalp, condition from mid length down, and keep conditioner off the attachment points entirely.
- Braid loosely for sleep. Overnight friction is the single largest cause of matting.
- Dry the attachment area properly. Damp beads or tape against the scalp is how odour and slippage start.
- Heat protectant every time, because extension hair cannot repair itself the way growing hair can.

Frequently asked questions
How long do hair extensions last?
The attachment needs moving up on a cycle of weeks as your hair grows. The hair itself lasts through several of those cycles when cared for properly, then needs replacing. Both numbers depend on method and aftercare, and your stylist gives you them at the consultation.
Can you tell someone is wearing extensions?
Not when the color match and placement are right. The usual giveaways are a flat single shade against dimensional natural hair, and an extension that ends in a shelf rather than blending into your own taper.
Are extensions worth it for fine hair?
Often yes, and fine hair is one of the most common reasons people come in. Fine hair changes the method and reduces the total weight that can be installed safely, but it does not rule extensions out.
What happens if I stop wearing extensions?
They are removed at the salon and your own hair carries on as before, assuming the weight was appropriate and the move ups were kept. Shedding after removal often looks alarming and is usually hair that shed normally over the wearing period and was held in place by the attachment.
Can I color my extensions?
Extension hair does not respond to color the way growing hair does and cannot repair itself afterward. Match at install and refresh tone with a gloss instead. Talk to your stylist before any color goes near them.
How far ahead should I book extensions for a wedding?
Early enough for the install and at least one move up before the date, so the hair has settled and any adjustments are done. Bring your date to the consultation and your stylist will work backward from it.
Do extensions work on short hair?
There is a minimum length needed to conceal the attachment and blend the join. Below it, the extension shows. Your stylist will tell you honestly at the consultation whether you are there yet or need to grow a little first.
Ready to talk it through
The consultation is free and carries no obligation. Bring photos of the length and thickness you want, come with your hair down and unstyled, and be ready to talk about budget honestly, because it changes which methods are worth discussing at all.
